Can a Pacifier Cause a Rash?

To prevent a rash wipe your baby’s face after meals and sanitize your pacifiers daily to make sure excess bacteria isn’t getting into the raw, red skin! To help keep your infant pacifier clean, invest in an Ingy Bingy Band, the greatest pacifier wristband!

Infant pacifiers have been saving parents' sanity for years. However, infant pacifiers don’t come without some problems here and there! Sometimes babies can develop a rash around their mouths. Is this from their pacifier?

Maybe! There are a few different reasons that I will touch on below for why a pacifier could cause a rash. However, the more likely reason for a rash around the mouth/nose area is drool or snotty noses!

If your baby is sick or teething you are probably constantly wiping your baby’s mouth/nose area! My oldest son has sensitive skin so he always has chapped red skin when he has a cold due to repeatedly wiping his nose. Now, mix this wet substance (drool or snot) with the rubbing of a pacifier and it’s likely a rash will form!

How to help the rash:

-Petroleum jelly: This stuff is soothing and cooling and will hopefully help that rash disapear ASAP! It can be difficult to keep creams on babies so it’s great to put it on right before nap or bedtime to keep them from wiping it off!

-Limit time with the pacifier: To prevent the rash from getting worse, reduce the amount of time the wet substances are rubbing against the newborn pacifier!

-Clean: Wipe your baby’s face after meals and sanitize your pacifiers daily to make sure excess bacteria isn’t getting into the raw, red skin!

To help keep your infant pacifier clean, invest in an Invy Bingy Band! This pacifier wristband velcros around baby’s wrist to help them locate, reinsert their paci and self-soothe from as early as 4 months! Whether you want to call it a pacifier wristband or pacifier bracelet, it will save you time and frustration because you won’t be constantly looking for it when the infant pacifier keeps falling out! If it’s attached to their wrist, you won’t have to worry about all the excess germs from baby dropping it on the ground!

Other reasons a pacifier could cause a rash:

Age: Your baby will need a different newborn pacifier as they get older. You might think, does it really matter if my 8-month-old uses a newborn pacifier meant for a newborn? Yes, it does matter because all infant pacifiers aren’t the same. As your child grows, infant pacifiers also change shape and firmness. These age guidelines exist to keep your baby safe and ensure the pacifiers work effectively! If your baby is using a newborn pacifier, but is almost 2 years old, a rash could develop because it isn’t the appropriate size for your child.

Growth: As your baby grows, their face will grow and the pacifier they used as a newborn won’t feel as normal. The nipple on pacifiers will get longer and firmer to accommodate your child’s growing mouth. If it’s too small, it may attach to your child’s face uncomfortably causing a rash.

Strength: Your child’s sucking ability will strengthen as they age. If an older baby/toddler is using a 0-3 month pacifier older they could be sucking too hard and form a rash around their mouth!
